Taking One Day at a Time : Temporal experiences in the context of unexpected life course transitions

Introduction Although it would be inaccurate to suggest that time has been neglected in sociology (Nowotny, 1992) it is a frequently taken for granted presence, embedded in normalcy and thus escaping a critical gaze (Daly, 1996). The intangibility of temporal experience raises challenges for its study, yet everything people do is embedded and extended in time across the modalities of past, present and future (Adam and Groves, 2007) making it an inescapable aspect of our existence.
